This was going to just be a picture of Fergus (John St. Ryan, left), whom I deeply love—but I couldn’t find one just of him from the show (full body).
I wish more people remembered this show: remembered *Vera*, who was a strong and awesome and slightly broken female character (who obviously would have become even more central had there been more episodes, and not relegated to love interest) an early TV appearance by Farscape's future Scorpious (Wayne Pygram), Melissa George, Sebastian Roche giving a perfect performance as a truly monumental ancient evil, the only acting I've ever seen by Deborra-Lee Furness (Hugh Jackman's wife), pre-Felicity Kerri Russell. And Heath. Amazing Heath. Being like, 19 and making an incredible heart to this show no matter the silliness that it sometimes stepped in. He ruled Roar. You believed every bit of it.
And episodes directed by Ralph Hemecker, who would go on to create TNT’s Witchblade and to direct a great deal in the OUAT universe, and former teen idol Shaun Cassidy who always, always creates/produces the most interesting plots and characters as far as I’m concerned (Cover Me, American Gothic)
It was a great show.
I remember when it was originally on TV, but I never watched it until SciFi bought it and showed previously unaired episodes.
It takes a moment to find its footing, but Heath’s sheer charisma gets you through the bumpier parts earlier on. It shares a vibe with BBC Robin Hood, I think, with Fergus as a sort of Much, and Diana as a version of the Sheriff (although I’m not sure what/who that would make Longinus—he’s too clever and by-turns in charge of what’s going on to be Guy). The plots are action-based but the true heart of the show beats strongly, and even if it’s not a soap opera or high drama, enough is given to viewers about each characters’ drama that it works (again, much like Robin Hood). And it’s ripe pickin’s for fanfiction…
I am so gonna get out my DVDs and watch this again.
(for the curious: the show is set in Britain when the Romans are in control. Heath’s character is the head of a Celtic tribe working to fight against their oppressors. Vera’s is a former Roman slave who has joined with the dispossessed Heath intends to lead in an uprising one day. The bad guy is actually a bad girl, Diana, a former courtesan now on the outs with Rome who rules this corner of Britain for the Romans as a sort of banishment with her ‘creature’, the weirdly immortal Longinus. And the good guys that are men get to wear torques/tocs which is all kinds of hot don’t try to tell me different.)
